ACOLYTES

What is an Acolyte?  The word acolyte is taken from an ancient Greek word meaning companion, attendant, or helper.  Acolytes work closely with the pastors and take part in church services to help people worship God.  Every Sunday, the acolytes light and extinguish the candles on the altar along with carrying the cross into the sanctuary.  Since ancient times, light and fire have reminded people that God is here with us.  When the acolytes bring the light (fire) into the sanctuary, they are reminding people that God is with us in our worship service.  When the acolytes extinguish the candles and walk out of the sanctuary with their candlelighters, they are reminding people that when we scatter out into the world, God is with us.
The acolytes also assist during the service by helping the Lay Leader with the offering.

Children entering 3rd grade or higher are invited to serve as Acolytes in traditional worship. Training is offered annually (usually start of the new school year) or on an individual basis by arrangement.

Acolytes typically serve once a month and are expected to arrive 15 minutes prior to the service.
The monthly schedule can be located under the acolyte tab on this website or in the church newsletter.

For more information about acolytes, or if your child is interested in serving as an acolyte please contact the Children's Director.
